Dog Banks (and sometimes a Cat Bank) have been placed in our area in participating  businesses.  The proceeds go directly to the spay/neuter fund, so please donate your change!

No more Unwanted Pets

About Us

The Umpqua Valley Humane Society began operating  in Douglas County in 1953.  We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and our goal has always been to achieve

NO MORE UNWANTED PETS!

We offer assistance where needed:

· Spay/Neuter

· Emergency medical

· Vaccinations

· Dog houses and Blankets

· Food

· Safe Haven ( temporary foster care for homeless dogs and cats)

We purchased a bullet proof vest for the drug enforcement dog in Douglas County, Gunter.

Medical Emergencies and Abuse/Neglect

UVHS works closely with Douglas County Animal Control Officers and our local Veterinarians to provide assistance with animal abuse or neglect cases.  In the past, we have provided feed for starving horses and llamas, vet care for an injured burro and helped with medical costs for many injured dogs and cats.

Animal Therapy

Some of our members have taken their dogs to visit local nursing homes and care facilities.  These dogs bring that special comfort and caring to the elderly and ill that often only an animal can provide.

School Education

One of our UVHS members and an Animal Control Officer take a dog to visit the schools.  They provide an educational program on the humane treatment and  handling  of animals.  Since the inception of this program, juvenile animal abuse has dropped in  Douglas County.

Dog House Loaner Program

Two of our members build dog houses which they provide a s “loaners” to low income families to insure that all pets have a house to shield them from the weather.   Donations of building materials for this program are always welcome.

In 2007 we purchased oxygen masks for the Roseburg and surrounding Fire Departments  to help resuscitate dogs at the scene of a fire.

The Fire Trucks were already  equipped with infant oxygen masks that work on cats, so we didn’t forget about them.

Besides Cats and Dogs we also help find homes for other types of animals.  We have help Parrots, Canaries, Finches, many other types of birds, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, and even a Hedge Hog.  We will continue to help any and all animals that are brought to us in need.

Unfortunately we do not have a shelter, and can only foster small animals in the  Shoppe.  If you call or come in we can help you find a foster home and eventually a permanent home for you pets.  We currently have a list of family’s waiting and wanting pets.

All pets are required to be vaccinated before we will help with spay and neuter.  Don’t let this stop you from call us, we will help  and work with you to insure proper health of your animal.
